Arestin is an antibiotic that contains minocycline HCl that is used in conjunction with scaling and root planing therapies. It has shown to be 3 times more effective in improving gingival healing when compared to scaling and root planing alone.
Who should use Arestin?
Any adult who presents with a periodontal infection
Deep periodontal pockets
Who should not use Arestin?
Anyone who has a sensitivity or allergy to tetracyclines
Tetracyclines cause permanent discolouration to teeth and bone during development and should be taken with caution if breastfeeding or pregnant
How does it work?
Arestin is a locally applied product that is injected directly into the periodontal pocket
It is a small, bead-like powder that contains the antibiotic minocycline HCl that releases slowly over ten days to heal infected gingival tissues
Results show reduction in periodontal pocket depths
It is important to provide at home oral self care instructions to clients so they can help to promote periodontal health between office visits
Post Operative Instructions
Avoid touching the treated area(s) for one week after application
Avoid the use of interdental aids such as floss, toothpicks, etc. for 10 days after application
Avoid eating hard, sticky foods that may disrupt treated area(s) for one week
Regular dental re-care appointments are necessary to ensure periodontal health is being maintained
Contact your dental professional if you experience any pain, swelling, or other abnormal symptoms after application
